Rolling, it’s a technique that’s been phased out by many and replaced with diving and sprawling. Personally, I think they all have their place in the game and should be taught to young players. I’m sure there are valid points and counterpoints for the why and why not arguments. However, I personally like rolling. If it’s done properly, you can commit to the floor safely and transition from feet to floor to feet again extremely quickly and without using a lot of energy…since momentum does most of the work for you.

So while I know the roll has been shelved by many, I thought I’d throw out an old school technical article that I wrote a decade ago. A time when we challenged the idea that teams from Hawai’i couldn’t compete successfully in the open division. A time when defense ruled the day and we helped produce some of the best defenders in the country.
